Project No. 1: Alpinestars Cro-Mega XT '1992 meets 2008'

Thought to myself the other day that the alpinestars never really got a photo shoot. It was such a rush to finish it in time for the Peaks '08 that the only good shot I have is these 2 of Mr. K's (thanks Mr.K).

So after a nice winter ride in the snow (well mostly ice!) I gave the bike a good wash and took a few pics. The bike has'nt changed in spec too much except for new tyres, Panaracer Fire XC 1.8" front and 2.1" rear, and new disc pads. The bike is my hack (horrible way to describe a bike) and has done plenty of miles since I finished it back in September. It is a little lazy in places as a few predicted but i've minimised this by running the forks fairly soft and the 1.8/2.1" tyre combination has also made a great improvement. The bikes real specialism is fast singletrack, it absolutely fly's. It weakness is sadly on the climbs, it is still a tiny little bit lazy which is a shame as this is the riding characteristic I liked most about the old alpinestars e-stays.

Looks like i'll be riding this bike at Cannock and think it will be right at home there. Here's a few pics.

Just picked up one of these. Its a red cro mega dx found in the back of an old garage of my neigbours. This black one looks amazing, I am inspired. let the long evenings in the shed and ebay hunting sessions begin!

Sadly, i'll be breaking this build up in the New Year, Cannock was it's last outing. I have really enjoyed this bike but I feel it's now time to pursue another dream, a 1992 alpinestars ti-mega XTR. The Adrian Timmis Raleigh has opened my eyes to lightweight superbikes and I now find it hard to get motivated in the same way about this bike.

If you need a pilot for the Ti Mega I know where there is one ;)

I was thinking of making it a Tim Davies replica. But then I thought what the bloody hell would I ride! BTW what frame size did you ride the 45.0cm (17.7") or the 48.0cm (18.9"). Also any idea's where to start my search for a frame or complete bike?

Blimey, what ya gonna do with this then? single speed shop blaster stuntster? :D and all the bits? dare I say, build a modern with it all? :D

2 bike rule at my place. Thus, this is going. I'll keep the frame for old times sake, but the rest will be appearing on the for sale thread and soon after ebay. The bike is exceptionally well specced so hope to recoup a good bit of money back for the ti-mega project. I will miss it but I ride so much better on the Raleigh, think I owe it to myself to build a nice lightweight and ultimately all time dream bike.
