Mr. Cruyff.....

saddened me to hear he'd passed away, the best ever for my money..played in 4 positions for holland not out of necessity...it would be hard to name another that could pull that at intl level.

Kevin Keegan once told an intresting little anecdote about him playing v cruyff (mid '30's) in pat rice's testimonial, said Cruyff had chased him and nicked the ball from behind by means of a sliding-tackle-nutmeg and at that point in his (KK's) career with half a century of england caps and being european footballer of the year he was'nt having it...he set off after him to straighten the situation and said he was gobsmacked to discover Cruyff could straight-line him with the ball under control with his head up barking orders...said he'd never seen that before (run navigating a ball faster than he could without one) and had seen many international footballers.

Simply saying ^ he refused to play in the '78 finals is a bit swerved, he had a gun held to his/family's head in his own home and was told Argentina would be winning the world cup.

After ajax told him he was too olde at 36yrs he went to Feynoord....and did a league and Dutch cup double...

Re:

I was taken to football matches from 3yrs of age (we had more tickets than bread) and i grew up watching Colin the King Bell, by the time '74 come around i was still young but knew what i was watching, 6 weeks holidays and the world cup starting on the tele..the dutch v brazil in the 1/4's is burnt into me memory...the brazilians feared him...they'd run out of idea's, he'd out mamba'd em. Not in john barnes way but all over the pitch....complete class act..work of art.

His two adidas stripes on his shirt was intresting, he refused to wear thier tackle being sponsored by puma...the owners of adidas and puma were brothers

Re:

Sad news,

Was one of my football heroes as a kid, along with Neeskins and several others in the team.
I had a soft spot for the Dutch national team, as did my best mate.
Why?
Because they were the best, of course!

RIP Johan
