No, King Knut was wiser than that. He didn't sit there on his throne on the beach all day. He only sat there while the tide was coming in. Having made his point, he left. Had he arrived when the tide was going out, he would have commanded it not to go out.

Funny now to think that it was another seven hundred years before Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity and explained tidal forces. King Knut's people really did believe that he could turn back the tides, just as we today bow down before the majesty of King Scant, who even understands suspension. :shock:
