thank you, although It's the wide q factor that my knees aren't liking at the moment...!

where is the middle on an 8 speed cassette? 4 or 5? I would say 4 as most of my riding is on these top 4 cogs..

Check the chainline first...should be between 47.5 and 50mm between th emiddle chainring and the centreline of the seattube.

Back to Q-factor, my Coda triple is around 167mm. A little wide, around 5-6mm wider than current triples. 137mm across the insides of the cranks at the pedal fitting.

If you really need to go to a narrower set, the road BB for Coda/MMC are 125mm long, 14mm shorter than the Mountainbike triple. So if you can get hold of one, it'll move the cranks in by 7mm each side.
