I can't afford that. What are eecentric BBs like?

seriously, unless you can just stick a chain on (maybe with a half link?) and it happens to be the right tension (it does happen sometimes), then a simple chain tensioner is your cheapest option.
I ran an On One 26'er like that for a while , when I decided that singlespeed was definately for me I changed to a singlespeed specific frame.

Well, I suppose that counts as a simple chain tensioner, really. Works for agressive DH, no reason why it won't work for SS.
