Help with identification of a Raleigh

New brake hoods can be bought here (in the UK though...)

The frame is almost certainly from a 'town' type bike, rather than a road bike as the lugs aren't the same as Raleigh were using on their 'low end' racers at the time.

The 'serial' number stamped on the side of the seat tube may relate back to a former use.. perhaps it was a 'post office' bike, or something along those lines, and this was a serial number noting as such...

Thanks for the link MrW.

I think I have solved the "puzzle" about the WAR frame number and guarantee.
The bike is clearly a Raleigh made in Nottingham, and the frame number on the back of the saddle post determines that. The number on the side of the saddle post is the import number, made by the Danish import firm. In this case, as far as I understand, the first letter W (sometimes WN) is used for imported bikes in Denmark, the AR is the import firm which in this case is Raleigh Denmark (earlier Vilhelm Nellemann A/S). The five digits is its serial number, and the D is an indicator for the import year - here it is '88.

So all in all, the side saddle post number is comprised of three parts: The importer, the serial number and the year of import.

I found this info on a Danish wiki page: http://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Det_danske ... for_cykler
