Help with dating an early stumpjumper

Just had the stumpjumper dropped off today, so will start to strip the parts off tomorrow (sun).

I have been told to keep the frame as near as original as possible. the frame has a few rust spots, especially around the chain stays.

Does anyone have advice on how to protect the frame without further damaging the paintwork, but at the same time getting rid of the rusted areas?.

will post a few pics tomorrow (weather permitting)
