doesnt look like much but it has had a fair whack and it has creased the rear quarter

you can see the panel gap under the rear light is no longer even. where the flash has caught is the crease in the swage line. cant really see how this is ever going to be fixed. i suppose new panels.

truly gutted as i have just put down a sizeable deposit on a 20 valve turbo engine conversion for it.

it still makes me feel sick to look at it

Gutted!
How did it happen?

I wouldnt worry too much however, as a worse thing happened to my Mums old Volvo 340 (I know, nowhere near as nice as a good GTi, but principle the same)....

Basically I managed to find another 340 in a scrappy and had him cut the entire 3/4 section out with an oxy torch, then I unpicked the spot welds in both the car and the new section, remove the offending bent outer panel, and replace with the new one. The only visable joins were across the C pillars (if I recall), and I managed to get them dead flat, so you couldnt see them after blending in the paint!

It was looking for a new bumper that led me to another scrappy where I found my '61 Beetle, so it was worth it in the end!

Chin up, and let us know how it happened and where things go from here

unfortunately, i have known 2 golfs be written off for relatively minor damage to the rear panel due to the size and shape of it (i think it was £800+ for the panel about 9 years ago so god knows what they run at now)

modern body shops can do a lot now though, especially if they have a graham, walter or brian type who are time served from the days when they actually repaired panels rather than just throwing new ones on.

hope you get it sorted though, its a nightmare when people don't have the decency to leave contact details or at the very least a sorry note when they mash someone elses possessions.

parked downa cul de sac round the corner from my house. had a word with a few neighbours but nobody saw/heard.

unkleg - it was parked up for a few days, went to drive it on saturday night and found it like this so no idea. the road is plenty wide enough for it not to have been in the way. i guess someone was just careless.

I backed an old gti of mine into a bollard 10 years ago at quite some speed and there is more damage here than on the old shell so whoever did it will have definately felt it!

jax, there is a mini specialist up the road and they have dealings with a panel beater so i am going to have a word

That's terrible mate. :(

Now's not the time to tell my GTI horror story then?
