Betd bearing kit is well worth it IMO. Ok, it's not cheap but I used mine for 2 years before storing the bike for 12 years and the bearings still feel great.
Good thing is that you can just replace the parts you need as you go along. I did all of mine except the Horst link. From what you've said, I'd go for the two main frame pivots then do the rear shock linkage as and when you need to.
 
I bet the kits were cheaper 14 years ago.

I should probably give them a go - any fitting advice from your experience all those years ago?

Not that much!

From what I remember, the biggest difficulty was removing the old bushings from the main frame without damaging it. The new bearings knocked in with a socket pretty easily.
 
Cheers. Does anyone have a pic of the removal/original configuration? I can see on some level how the bearing replacement works, but a few linkages are puzzling me.
