GT Lightening

I have a 1997 GT lightening which I have owned from new all original apart from brake levers, tried to find some kind of listings or recent sales to give me some idea of value. So here I am asking for some advice on the value trying to gain funds for a road bike. To nice and original to pound the roads with now ? Any help would be grateful.

Bike is a 21" frame I'm just over 6' and owned this bike from New but only used it for about 3 weeks if that before I came off the bugger and now have about the same amount titanium in my left side as the bike has. The bike came off better than me put it that way I had to change the brake levels only. Got the bike for the frame to up grade the components at a later date but after coming off didn't see the point at the time. Serviced regularly and only used a handful of times out with the kids. Still got the original brake pads on.

To give you an idea I sold a Lightning frame in the last year I think for
£400. It was in good condition but not mint with original decals etc.
They are good bikes and personally could never tell the difference in riding between these and a Xizang. The bike snobs will tell you it is made in Taiwan and not in the USA and not polished like the Xizang, hence it commands a lower price. However these were only produced for a couple of years and hence are somewhat rarer and as I said an excellent ride. Hold out for the right buyer and I think in good condition for a complete bike you should get £500.

I've been typing this while you posted pictures, in that condition you may get more.

Cheers with everything more or less standard it would be a shame to strip down looking for something to get back into shape of some sorts really didn't want to start changing spec if someone likes the original. More pictures once I resize them.

Looking at the parts, it would probably get stripped an dbetter stuff put on. By better I mean higher end names and numbers.

It is true what the fluffychicken says. A lot of people will want 'higher ' end parts on it. In this case I think it would be a shame, it is a piece of history in the sense that a manufacturer tried to find a way of bringing a really good quality bike into the reach of more people. Ironic that an awful lot is now made in Taiwan and nobody bats an eyelid. Somebody may want it for its originality let's hope so.

The frame is the only part with some value here really. Nobody wants to spend 4/500 pounds on a ti frame and then kit it out with stx parts and indy forks. Stripping it wouldnt be a shame, in fact its probably the best idea
