A proper inflatable mat rather than one of the self inflating foam ones is definitely the way to go. I've got a Thermarest Neoair which is fantastic, very comfie, warm and light for backpacking (probably not a concern for you though). With a 1 man tent you won't want anything too thick or your nose will be scraping the top of the tent all night
. The one I have is about 2" thick and fits perfectly in my small Vango backpacking tent.
The top end Thermarests are pretty pricey but there are other cheaper equivalents available, check out Go Outdoors or Blacks websites for an idea of what's available. The link below takes you to an example of what I'm on about.
