89 Ridgeback 602

Here’s my recently acquired lucky skip find.
I guess it was dumped as not working due to seized cables.

It’s an 18” 602 EX equipped with Exage Mountain.
Looking at the catalogue these retailed in 1989 for £390 and 18” was the smallest size.

It’s in great condition for its age, with no signs of rust on the frame; anything that looks like it is specs of dirt.

The parts look all original to the catalogue; apart from some rubbish wheels and no seatpost / saddle.
I’m guessing the seat was taken before I found it, but I’d much prefer this over a seized post.

Dadstardeluxe do you know the seatpost diameter on your Ridgeback? Much appreciated if you do :D

The right shifter has a cracked dust cover on one of the shifters so I’ll be posting a wanted ad for a broken Exage Mountain shifter.

Apart from that I think all it needs is a good strip-down, touch-up / cut and polish, new cables; and period grips , seatpost, saddle and wheels.

Shame it’s not a U-Brake frame as on my wish list.
However, think I’ll probably be looking Italian anyway, to match my graphite Centaur U-Brakes ;) .

Darn-it, I was giving it a quick clean to put in the shed house and notice the bottom bracket has bad side-ways movement.

If the cups are too damaged I might cheat and get a modern sealed square taper BB.. lol

Re:

That is a very decent skip find indeed!

Have you serviced it and brought it back to life yet? My first was a 602EX from the year before... The blue one with the grey decal writing, which I adored until some thieving scumbag swiped it in Muswell Hill. My arse hurt for a month after it had been whipped and tanned after that little episode!

So this is a new thread for a Christmas Karma frame I gladly received from Ian (ishaw). Frame is really good, I particularly like the splatter paint job. I also got some other parts from Ian to get the build going, and though I have made some progress in the living room (understanding wife), it's some way off yet and I am trying a few things out to decide on the final spec. Am not after catalogue perfection, just something that looks period correct. Just thought I'd post this and follow it up to see what you thought. Will get better pics soon...
Thanks

I've just picked one of these today for a tenner. Its in very good condition, apart from non original rear wheel with a disc thats been hand painted black. and completely missing its front brake. Also has bar ends as well.

This bike has come with Exage Trail which I dont see the in the brochure and a white stem.

Hi, just finished a complete strip, service, and replace, on the 601...
Cantilever brakes were finicky to tweak and tune, but well worth it, they perform very well...

I had 603 gs bitd, Paid £350 for a set of Pace 35 AB forks to go on it, one of the best riding bikes I ever owned, wish I still had it now :(
