...actually I found an XT sl-m730 r/h shifter (and a non-matching l/h LX shifter) in my parts stash. I thought it was six speed, but it has at least seven clicks. I forget... will it work properly as a 7 speed shifter?

Not STI... it's one of these:

Definitely designed as a 6 speed according to the net (and it has 6 little lines on it) but it does have an extra click. I think 6 speed is more pull than 7 speed though so probably not going to work. Oh well...

Interesting. The Sheldon page linked to says 6 speed is 5.5mm between centres, whereas 7 speed is 5mm... I can imagine it would work...ish...but maybe slightly iffy shifting/noisy drivetrain? You find it OK though?
