6k a grey box bought!

Re:

I get upper 50's to early 60's mpg from my Octavia.

It's up to 76,000 in three years now and going nicely.

Watch the servicing cost of a BMW, Jon's 3 series is over 150,000 now, but demands some pricey parts from time to time.

Re: 6k on a grey box. What would you buy?

Brand new Dacia?

Anything you do buy make sure for recent cambelt or at least budget for a change in the near future.

£6k... Hmmm theres sooo much 'stuff' out there!

Avoid the French, avoid the obscure, tread carefully around the Italians and be cautious about the Fords. Jump at a Japanese, but never overlook the Koreans.

The Germans are just, well, Germans.

And you'll be well into diesel DPF territory. Some do it well, some dont and come to a chugging halt due to too many low mile journeys. A stuck EGR is often mistaken for blocked DPF, even by the AA/RAC.

Just as an aside, the Missus' Merc gets nearly 50mpg and thats a small wee 2.0 supercharged petrol. Thats nearly 16 years old so dont discount modern petrols either.

A bit slow but look at the MPG!

Re: 6k on a grey box. What would you buy?

Not liking run flats and hard ride on the bmw.

Hadn't considered Seat Ibiza. Like you say, too much choice so befuddling.

Re: 6k on a grey box. What would you buy?

Golf 1.6 tdi estates appeal.

Just realized I've had the passat saloon (TDI 1.9 130 bhp) on the commute for 6 years without a hiccup. Serviced every 10k, cam belt at 100 etc but no issues at all. needs 4 tyres, a service and some front wings hence decision to change as it's only worth about 500 quid if i'm lucky. Just MOT'd with no advisories though.

Re: 6k on a grey box. What would you buy?

So, VW 1.6tdi, ford 1.6 tdci, or would you consider skoda 1.6 tdi and Hyundai i30 1.6tdi?

That's where I'm at. Will buy something straight after Easter weekend so I have time to ponder.

And what's all this dpf malarkey? Change at 75k? Do they all have them then?

Re: 6k on a grey box. What would you buy?

Question: Why do some sellers list models with DPF in the title? Reading around this it suggests all cars after 2009 have some kind of DPF system{?} in order to comply with new emissions.

Re: 6k on a grey box. What would you buy?

DPF go back to the early 2000's in some vehicles (and many decades in other types). They should last the life of the car but short journeys kill them and quite often the car along with it due to costs.

The PSA sourced engines use a cartridge of pig wee to clean them, others use extra fuel to burn through (sometimes causing excess fuel in the engine oil which buggers the engine!).

So many different methods. The internet says: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_particulate_filter (a bit US biased but gives a rough idea)

Short journeys kill the diesel. Low mileage cars should be checked very carefully. Many bits of freely available software and an 'On Board Diagnostics' OBD plug connected to a laptop will give you a DPF 'life' reading.

After the AA declared ours full and defunct, it actually measured only 17% full - I no longer trust anybody unless I'm looking at an actual live reading on a screen.

The MOT features a visual check so those who remove it and delete it from the cars ECU may come a cropper too.

*As an aside, ours currently has a split in the flexi pipe on the exhaust and is currently much more economical and faster as its not trying to push the exhaust gas through a breeze block... But it sounds like the little engine that could.

We had two Doblos. One was the older non DPF which would get anything up to 65mpg on its display. The later DPF engine barely gets into the 40's with 51 at best despite being the same weight within a few kgs and having the supposedly better engine. The gearing was changed to force the engine revs higher at relatively low speeds in order to keep the DPF clear. But to do that it has to burn more fuel, creating more soot! Aggggghhhhh!!!!!

Wish I'd never bought the damn thing!

Re: 6k on a grey box. What would you buy?

Looking at your Passatt, unless theres anything drastically wrong with it, drive it until it drops dead.
