Rather than wear out or damage nice hard to replace vintage parts by riding them, would it be better preserving them for mountain biking heritage? I had an old Smoke and Dart in a crumbling state which I wouldn't trust my life to but they looked okay for exhibition or the 'museum of old parts'.

Yes, I think that's a good idea. I might buy a second set of retro wheels (without tyres) and fit new rubber onto those. :)
