I thought I’d add my first build thread, a 19” 1990 concept seat tube Brodie Romax, serial # 1286. It’s coming a little late as I picked this one up in Sept. ‘21 and it’s nearly wrapped up but figured it would be nice to share this Brodie’s journey.

As it was described before, this bike was stored in a basement in the early 90s here in BC and appears to have seen very little use. Supposedly, there were not too many of these later Romax frames built with the concept seat tube that navigated away from their predecessors adorning the admittedly beautiful seat tube collars. As I understand, a switch in tubing to Tange Prestige may have made this possible. It came to me equipped with a nearly full and clean DX group, sprinkled with a little bit of Syncros, XT and Suntour. That being said, finding the right bits has been fun and makes this bike feel a little more personalized. Here’s a few photos as received, prior to any modifications.

The build begins. A nice set of black M730/M732s hubs popped up on our local Marketplace which made it a fun choice to aim for a black XT group build. Luckily I was able to find a decent black XT crankset as well as a few other goodies along the way. A couple of bits are all it needs to be finished to my liking, and it should go without saying that I am ultra stoked to be nearing the finish line. Some bits as they came around:

I cheated on one part of this build so far and did a rattle can repaint to achieve a clean set of black XT callipers. I haven’t got photos yet but managed to save the STI decals on a sticker back and reapplied them with double-sided tape for durability. All in all, they turned out okay.

Here’s a photo of where it’s at now. Not all bits have been added just yet but it’s riding nice until I hit the home stretch. Currently it’s got a Kona Velocity stem that’s not fitting the bill. Thanks to a wonderful forum member, a special replacement is on its way😎 and it won’t be long after that it’s completely finished and ready for a final set of photos and build specifications. More fun to come 🤓

Very nice. I recall when this one surfaced last year

really nice frameset.
i think its lost a little bit of the classic look with all the black parts. I think it would do great with a silver/ black (maybe Biopace) Crankset and silver brakes...only my two cents.
but nice work anyway.
all the best
Kay

Nice, got to love a splatter paint job

Though i do like a blacked out bike, i agree with Kay about the silver components suiting the frame/fork better.
