A potentially irrelevant (as ever) aside, but just fitted a NOS Smoke 700x45c front tyre to my cyclocross bike and had plenty of clearance.
Not sure what point I'm making, possibly just that cyclocross frames can take pretty wide tyres, or at least some frames can.
