managed to uncover the frame umber last night after drilling out the bolt on the cable guide, any ideas on what this could be 31 391 :?

Random guess that 91 would indicate it was made in 1991 and could possibly be a late 91 or early 92 spec model...

Thanks for that any clues as to the model from that number? I'm not entirely sure it's a Kilauea;-(

Do you mean that the seat tube is ovalised where it meets the bottom bracket shell? If it's the top and down tubes that are ovalised and they taper from rear to front, then it's a 1993 Kilauea not a 92.

The 91 Cinder Cone I have at the mo has got some crazy ovalisation at the base of the BB but nowhere else:

I'll check the serial number to see if it has a similar looking format to yours...

Well this might or might not help: F11 02 803. It wasn't under the cable guide though but by the left hand side of the bb.
