They are often thought of as snow and sand bikes......show them a rocky descent or xc route and you will see what these bikes can do.

Went out on this yesterday with the boy who was on his Ridgeback MX14 and went a couple of miles to a local cafe. Where I live is full of pensioners and it got a hell of a lot of attention while me and the lad had some cake outside in the sun. Certainly gets people talking to you.
