Crank choice

You're right it should be the other way round. Probably put it that way round cos the campagnolo crank wouldn't have fitted fitted as snug to the frame as it would have with the right bb. Maybe...it's round he wrong way anyway ;)

Here is a photo of the spindle sticking out further on the non drive side, is this correct, I tend to think not, but will be happy to be proved wrong!
There's no firm rule on symmetry of bottom bracket axles. Many cranks are designed to use a spindle with greater overhang on the drive side; many use a symmetrical spindle; a few use a longer non-drive side. Your Chorus cranks should have been fitted to a 111mm symmetrical ISO-tapered spindle.

The asymmetry of your bottom bracket may be due to fitting a unit intended for a 73mm shell in a 68mm frame, pushing the whole unit leftwards. A 73mm unit will have "73" stamped on the drive-side flange. It's not straightforward to fit a cartridge BB backwards in a BSC-threaded frame (which, presumably, your Rourke is): the drive-side cup has a left-hand thread.

Be prepared to replace the bottom bracket no matter what cranks you decide to use. Cranks and axle need to match. Shimano 600 cranks typically require a 113mm bottom bracket axle.
