Malware Help!

Old School Grand Master
Guys, I have somehow managed to pick up Casclient (Casino Client?) on my PC. I'm assuming it is nothing to do with casinos as I have never gambled. Search and Destroy can find it (I'm having to run in safe mode) but when I come to remove the little blighter it blows me out.

What can I do? Thanks in Advance.

And to be sure, until it's sorted don't be doing any online banking or Paypal transactions. You can never be sure who's watching a compromised PC.

Comeon itl be some tw@ who thinks being a "hacker" or whatever term they call themselves now ( probably something - warrior ) is underground and spends his evenings accompanied only by his smug self authoritative reflections looking back at him from twin 21' screens .

Not that i hate these people for causing a nuisance or anything , I just cant wait for the interweb to become virtual and we can deal out some swift physical pain back .

Windows will always be open to attacks as long as they continue to give the main and only user administrative rights .

Id type msconfig into run and check the list of processes that open on start up ( although iv found msconfig in comprehensive so i use a little program called autoruns ) look for anything that seems iffy and google it ( it really helps if you have another computer handy ) it should tell you where the thing is hiding , almost always in the system 32 folder . Go in there and delete it .

You're right, it may just be the work of a script kiddie who has no friends and wants to cause a bit of mischief. But it might not. And now, the banking code has been changed so you may not be covered if it was found you did not act "with due care". Using your PC for internet banking if you know there is malware on it might mean you aren't covered.

The profile of the average cracker has changed massively in the last couple of years. It's much more about money now than it used to be.

Perry, everything is open to attacks. Windows is vulnerable because it is ubiquitous, and most people that use it aren't knowledgeable about the issues around computers so are easy to trick.

If Ubuntu or whatever took over on the desktop (one day  ), there would be more malware written to exploit it. Until then, we are protected by our individuality and a much more technically aware user base.

Thanks guys! The PC is dead. It was the fact that I had anti malware on there (Search & Destroy) that caused the crash. As soon as it tried to delete the exe file, the RAM usage went sky high and initiated the blue screen of death. I had to reinstall XP and even that didn't go smoothly with it being stuck in a safe/normal mode loop.
I am currently on my compooter course machine trying to summon any enthusiasm for databases.
I have learnt my lesson (and lost a lot of photographs) and am off to purchase a proper antiviral program.

Is Kaspersky still the best?

Nothing will be lost on that HDD, you can recover files upto 4 formats previously fairly cleanly dependng what they are, and some corrupted jpg's can be recovered alos, it actually takes a LOT of effort to delete data permenantly!

As for the actual problem you had, i had a similar one, it targeted the malware program, blue screened. In the end i had to use command prompt to delete enough suspected files to be able to run safe mode and then rid the blighter.
