hard Tail Mountain Bike for Around £1100

So - after some *&£! broken into my shed an stole my modern hardtail I now have £1100 insurance money to spend on a new bike - what are your thoughts? Looking for something reasonably "punchy" but open to all ideas. Currently looking at these:

Do you have to spend the money all in one place?

For Carbon On One are offering a bundle with the Whippet and decent forks for £600. Some judicious cherry picking could see you on a super light XC setup with much better components than an off the shelf bike would typically exhibit.

Be interested to know how far that £1100 would go toward a 1 or 2-year-old bike?

Giant XTC Carbon/Composite?

I've ridden one and was surprised by how well it rides, 2nd hand prices are well within your budget for a bike about a year or so old.

But of the 2 you have listed in your original post, I#'d go for the Whyte I think.

Always worth looking at Pauls Cycles for a last years model with a substantial discount: http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/

In 2008 I bought a 2007 model Giant XTC Composite 3 with a £600 discount, with the exception of the paint job and the forks, which were Rock Shox on the 2007 model, rather than similar level of Fox forks on the 2008 model, it was identical.
