What are these holes for?!

So I'm probably being a total retard but just cleaning this xt m730 chainset and noticed the small holes on the inside of the granny ring. Never in my 30 years of fiddling with bike have I noticed them. Got some onza and tioga rings here with no mysterious little holes....just Shimano and noticed they aint on my xt m750 chainset...hmmmmmmmm.
Am I a total fucktard?

when the chainset is mounted those extra bits stop the chain from getting wedged between the chainset and BB

Nope, Just shimano.

Those tabs appear in various forms - with/ without holes - on Biopace, 4 hole, 110BCD stuff, 94BCD stuff

I have some Sugino rings with tabs like that, but with a thin ring of alu joining the tabs, same function, different execution.

What are these holes for?!
