Gotta love these quirks that older bikes have...

So I'm trying to get this done, but the 34.9 front mech I had was too big, so I buy a 31.8, and that's too small! got the calipers out, and I'm looking at around 33.5.

Would a band on mech work? Do they come in different sizes?

Anyone got an m735 (or want)  ?

Re:

On two of the bikes I had powder coated the paint was so thick that initially a 31.8mm front mech would not fit.Because the jaws of the mech could not close, the usual bolt through could not reach the threads and secure the mech around the frame tube.My solution was to get an oversize bolt and use that to force the mech into the paint and once that was achieved I replaced the original short bolt.

Other than that a banded type has a wider range of adjustment.

Can't remember the details, but didn't the band's on band on mechs come in specific sizes like the standard clamps?

Dunno... never used them before, but I just googled the frame, and it did indeed have a pic of a 735 band on...

Re:

Yes they where different sizes. For the three imperial tube dimensions we use.

Do you have a picture of where you are putting it and what bike it is.
Chance it's paint (most common) or not a round tube anymore (often seen putting top-swing mechs onto old bikes with Ovalised or Bulged tube joints

Re:

I think I may have a band-on M735 front mech, 34.9mm.

I don't know if it would tighten down to 33.5mm though.
