Zaskar or Zasker or ZasKerr?

And I second the trying to stop people being duped.
I out as many of these as most because I hate to think of people being conned into buying something inferior. There's nothing wrong with a 7005 aly GT frame its just not a Zaskar. The people selling them as 'Zaskars' can't all be innocents who've been duped themselves.
Thinking of pete_mcc's point, now the Escort Cosworth was practically handbuilt in Germany for the Rally team, wereas all the other derivatives were the same body shell with a different spec. To the uninitiated a standard Escort with spoiler etc could look like a Cosworth. Its the same as the people are doing with Zaskars.

Matt you just muddied them more. Both the Zaskar and Zaskar LE in 1995 were made out of 6061 tubing.
Very interested in this thread because while I know odd bits and bobs I'm fairly sure most it is urban legend. 
So - in terms of 'Zaskar' the name (and this is outside the riding characteristics than lgf mentioned earlier) - I seem to remember it being famous partly because of Hans Rey and also partly because it was the only frame to win both the cross country and downhill world titles. This is my understanding anyway - hoping to have this confirmed one way or the other.
From a personal point of view I love mine - have ever since the day I finally managed to scrape together enough cash to buy it from the local bike shop BITD. Was always hugely proud that it came with a sticker on saying the name of the welder who hand made it (Eddie in my case). I still expect people to say 'wow' when I ride down the street... which is why I spend a lot of time disappointed.

I get comments all the time (mine doesn't even says its a Zaskar at mo.
I get a lot of 'nice GT' or 'cool is that a Zaskar'.

i wasn;t sure of this either, with all the claims being made by GT for the carbon and reissue, but not long ago I stumble across a pic in MBA of alison dulap winning the world champs on one. ANd apparently Nicolas Vouilloz won a world champoinship on one, but can't find a pic ever...maybe as a junior? Dunno

Great replies guys.....very educational.
I understand the whole thing of dressing something up to look like a better model.....I did exactly this BITD with 205 gti wheels on a 205 xs...... I guess my original question is more why is the Zaskar copied so much and not other makes? Maybe a polished frame is easy to copy with just a set of stickers........
