Your 'Retro' cut-off year

So whats going to be your cut-off year? Mine is now 1993.


Cant put my finger on it but I think that was the last year before big business and marketing really took over and the scene started fracturing into DH and freeride style categories.


1993 or earlier - thats where I'm staying.

Have to say.. bought the Cinder Cone new in '93 and thought that heralded the start of boring, grown-up etc. paint jobs. .

The earlier stuff was much nicer...

Really feeling the love of the '91 Karakoram.. to the point where I may not bother with the '97 Zaskar - getting like Ford Escorts round here anyway

Don't really know much about early MTB history etc. but seeing the earlier Fats, Konas, GT's. . . . so much nicer than new stuff..

And it's of no consequence whether it'll take more punishment or be quicker round a track etc. since I'll never do any of that stuff. .

Not sure I could have a cut-off year though.. not enough info in my heed for that

For me - 95
It was the last yeaf of cantis in top Shimano groups (of course cantis was available later - fex in XT, but it was definitly Vbrake era)

For me 93 was probably the best year for my personal tastes (paint schemes, individuality and kit/groupset's i liked) i go for 96/97 as the cut off as stuff was still good for a while after 93.

I dont have a cut off year, i like bikes from most years apart from monstrous downhill rigs only because it was never my thing, and these new fangled freeallmountainride things that come with 4 foot of suspension travel and weigh in at a mere 40lb :?

Yea, thats about it for me. I raced MTB's 92-95 before concentrating on road/TT/track.

I remember 93-94 as being the 'best' years for me, cantis were cool, Rock Shox and Pace suspension forks were the holy grail and ano was in.

My golden times were 88-93 when I was racing, then beer took over until 97 when I bought my Pace, all my new bikes since have a retro touch.
