Yet Another Purple One - 70’s Carlton Criterium

Fab looking bike great idea about a purple bike ride,,, the nearest I have is a polychromatic crimson... Maybe time to.... Nope not buying another bike....

It looks like centre pulls were on the 1974 bikes. Mine is a 1974 bike but has the 1972/3 colour scheme. I found what I think is a 73 stamp on the chromed headstock lugs, just to muddy the waters a little more.

The date will be when the lug was made, not when the bike was built. A lug from the year before the bike was built is perfectly normal and supports a 74 date for the bike.

I gave the Carlton some time today. I removed the chain, derailleurs, shifters and crankset in preparation for the VX upgrade and original cottered crankset refit. Next up will be to remove the bottom bracket, clean, then refit the cottered spindle. It’s all quite grimy around the bottom bracket shell, so a good clean is required there too. I’m dropping to a 49 tooth outer ring from a 52 tooth, so I’m guessing I might need a new chain when the time comes. Hopefully more progress will be made over the Easter weekend.

Edit… I meant I should be able to use the existing chain and shorten it if needed.

I have only ever once owned a Racer.
A Raleigh Europa - Team Raleigh report my dad bought for me second hand back in I think 1984.
But I’ve always liked the look of Racing bikes...
