Just looking for people who own or have ridden this fork to see if the problem I have is common or not.

On landing a 2.5 foot jump the rebound adjuster blew off and it spat out all the oil. Obviously the hard compression forced the oil downward and the pressure blew off the adjuster knob.

As far as I can see the only thing keeping the oil in there is the adjuster knob and small o-ring on the shaft bolt.

Has anyone had this problem or know of a soloution?

Why would you be jumping a fork like that.....on a jump like that?
Its an xc fork and a light one at that.

Its just a little lip with about 2.5ft drop on the other side. I didn't fly off the thing just floated it and landed smoothly. Your right though its not the right fork for that kind of thing. I dont do it often.

haha, it was 6 ft honest Gov!

On a 'between me and you' vibe, i do some fair sized drops on my SIDS.
I've got some of these... Dont know which model they are though

In their original incarnation they had a silver crown with marked stanchions. The rebound knob would never stay up where it was supposed to. I dont know why. Neither did TFT.
My mum had a pair on her bike, but the negative air chamber part had snapped. They did however have spotless black uppers.

As luck would have it they mated up perfectly, the correct parts all worked, and they have been bullet proof ever since.

I trust em going down steps and off 2 foot drops too, but just didnt want to recommend it ! HAHA

They look like 99 SID's going by the decals on the lowers. The crown looks same as a 98 or 99 SID but its been painted black. As far as I know they never came in black, only silver.

I have a full set of modern SID internals (for 28mm stanchions) including dual air spring and pure delite damper with lockout. I'm loking to see if there is a way to install them into my fork which is a custom 98 SID by the way. Using modified Y2K SID XC internals

Seems odd that the only thing holding the oil in the damper side is the rebound knob. Pull it out and its bye bye oil

I could just put a standard shaft bolt in and solve it that way.

sounds like you need a Tora 318 coil fork for that type of riding

Too heavy.

I've been considering a more suitable fork. Ideally I'd like to find something that can be adjusted down to 80mm travel, has good stiffness, and weighs no more than 3.5lb.

My usual riding is forest singletrack but I do like to go fast on the DH sections and the odd jump or 2 is good fun. Nothing too big though

Ah thanks for dating them.
They are black from the factory, came on the front of my old M4 stumpjumper.
Your project sounds interesting, tell me more! Why do you want to do it?

Maybe they were a Spesh OEM fork then.

I dunno on the project yet. The modern damper is 10mm longer than the 98 stanchion. So basically I'd need to modify it to make it fit. The other issue is the dual air spring assembly fits into the stanchion by a screw thread. On the 98 stanchion there is no thread, only a groove for a retaining clip (cir-clip).

Its probably do-able but a lot of hassle. it would be easier to get a modern 28mm SID upper assembly but the cheapest I have found for a new one is 140€. I could get a complete second hand fork for that
