Following on from the bottom bracket thread...and not really concerned with seat, post, stem, bars, wheels or forks/suspension

What are the 'acceptable' alternatives, with equal or better performance, quality, looks and price.. talking brand new parts, where available (or NOS at least), with the possible exception of the cranks

Rear mech : XTR
Cassette : XTR
Cranks : Cook Bros
Brakes : XTR disc
R/H shifter : XTR

Really??

Subjective of course but XTR, to me and in general, looks better - and is lighter too by all accounts.. XT just looks like relabelled lower end stuff.

Without going completely ott, XTR just seems that bit nicer than the lower XT stuff. .

The ano stuff looks lush.. but random reports of it not working as well as 'normal' kit aren't confidence inspiring...

well i see sram chains nearly alwas recommended and lot of the pros use the sram kit
i think it silly the stigmas companies get due to a few problems, i.e. normally brand haters, quite often just have their kit setup wrong. dont knock it until youve tried for yourself (this does however have some limits, that would be cheap crap, that doesnt need trying at all.)

You asked for "acceptable alternative, with equal or better performance"
XT is an acceptable alternative, and I bet you cannot really tell the difference between a slick new XT setup and a slick new XTR one.

And looks. . .

Still think that XT looks rather like relabelled LX (and similar) in many cases..
