Belgian cyclist Wouter Weylandt has died after crashing during Monday's third stage of the Giro d'Italia.

The Leopard-Trek rider fell at high speed during a descent about 20km (12.4 miles) from the finish of the stage from Reggio Emilia to Rapallo.

The 26-year-old lay motionless on the roadside as paramedics tried to resuscitate him.

Sad news

I was watching this afternoon live when it happened. The few brief shots shown before they cut away once they noticed how serious it was, showed it was clearly severe.
Very Tragic.

I always seem to forget how dangerous cycling is! I get the belief that on car-less roads cycling is safe. Then something like this just reminds me!

He cycled with 85 km/h when that happened. Very sad news, such a shame. Not first and probably not the last death on road race. Dangerous and demand sport.
