or is the cost disproportionate to any benefits?

If you wouldn't, what is the bb of choice from the Shimano range?

From crc..

• Precision engineered Shimano XTR sealed cartridge bottom bracket for M95x series XTR chainsets
• Large 22.2 mm diameter chrome-moly pipe billet spindle with 8 splines forms rigid and strong interface with XTR cranks
• Ball and roller bearings reduce flex
• Maintenance-free sealed cartridge design prevents ingress of water and dirt
• Aluminium adapter
• Available in 68 or 73 mm shell widths, and 112 or 116 mm spindle lengths
• Weighs an average of just 213 g

Unless I'm very much mistaken you have to use an XTR octalink-type BB if you're going to run M95x cranks. Alternative is Dura-Ace (just as pricey).

Any other Octalink doesn't fit properly and is likely to bugger your cranks up.

The original M950 BB was rebuildable but was a right faff to do. It has ball bearings and needle rollers in it that kept rolling under the fridge (I know from experience....) The more recent sealed ones were better if you were bog snorkelling regularly.

No I would not as I only have square taper cranks.
UN90/91 on the other hand are lighter than the 7x equivalents and mine is still going strong 18 years later

I too only have sq. taper at the mo... and, prior to this thread and looking at crc, didn't realise XTR wasn't available in other flavours

Are UN90/91 still available new??

+2 for Hope if we are talking external BB's :D

Actually would you buy anything XTR over say XT ( I love SRAM X9 and X0 shifters and rear mechs) :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:
