would like a bit of advice sprucing up my '89 Cinder Cone...

Retro Newbie
hello everyone, just joined up after stumbling across this site a few days ago during a heavy session of work internet - now need daily retro fixes to feed my addiction and have a bad feeling this is gonna result in some serious caning of my dolla!

anyway, was wondering if any of you guys would be kind enough to give me some advice regarding my distinguished gent of an '89 cinder cone?

generally in sweet shape, however the original bars and quill stem (the one with the internal cable guide wheel for the front canti) are getting pretty tatty so it's time to throw a bit of cash at it - what would you suggest? i'm guessing here, but would any replacement stem require the original headset to go as well?

any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks very much

Depends if you want it to be authentic, or you want it to be reborn as something new. Lots of people on here do both to good effect, and the results are impressive.

Are you happy with the bike? Would you still like her if she were different? Do you want to risk changing her characteristics by mixing more modern parts? Or do you just want a different colour?

You can do anything with this site, and spend any amount of money. Go wild!

Found this on Google, love it,something like that would be cool mate

before you do any sprucing up can you post some pics of the Cone as is.. I'm intrigued by the differences between the 89/90 as there is no 89 catalogue on the web that I can find...and am trying to work out the differences..

@ SB - good points mate, hadn't really thought about it in that way.... reckon i want to keep it as original as possible although looking at andy.i's picture and all the beautiful stuff kicking around this site (particular like all that anodised CNC stuff)... who knows! guess i'm just looking for a few idea's from you hardened retro pro's to get me going

@ hilts - not a problem mate, will try and get some up tonight before the footy (although its guaranteed to be a snoozefest, we all know it). have owned the bike from new (pulled the old xmas + birthday + paper round money move on the folks way back in the summer of '89) although to be honest i can't remember what all the stock parts were as i upgraded the mechs & cranks (pace rings) to suntour xc pro almost immediately after getting it. added the MD 7/8 speed thumbies soon as they hit the shelves around '92 (i think?). far as can tell from the 1990 catalogue the difference is the brakes - mine came with deore xt 2 finger levers with xt front canti and xt rear magnesium(?) u-brake rather than the suntour stuff

My advice would be, don't make any decisions just yet, spend some more time on here looking at peoples bikes, scouring the for sale thread, make sure you know what will and won't fit (credentials like headset size/type, stem length and type etc etc).

Then once you have some ideas, start asking for advice, people will be honest and helpful, and occasionally brutal  with their comments.

Don't forget ebay too, and local shops etc etc. Good luck, and can't wait to see some pic's!

Def take your time.

Then restore it to its original retro glory and buy up something a bit exotic to dress with anodised CNC'd bling to your heart's desire, spending all your money in the meantime.
