Vernier calipers would be better (and cheaper too - large micrometers aren't cheap items !) and is a useful thing to own anyway. However, just for ascertaining BCD and stuff like that a metric steel rule is more than accurate enough - it's easy enough to read a rule to an accuracy better than +/- .010" / .25mm .
