I have a large piece of vintage pitch pine which has been cleaned up and planed. I'm going to use this as a mantel piece but need some advice on how to treat the wood. I was going to oil it, but which to choose? Or is there a better protection method?

Oil it. You get a beautiful finish and it lets the wood breath. I would use "Liberon" finishing oil, which has a very slight sheen.
Depending how dry the timber is, apply with a brush or rag and allow to soak in for 10/15 mins. Then wipe off excess. Leave for a few hours, then repeat, as many times as you like.
It will come up luvly! :D
Don't varnish it. It will look gash. Varnish should only be used on yachts or fingernails.

+1 :D

Cheers folks :D Velo I'd heard to varnish would be to murder it and it'd look crap in no time.

Rob interested in your method, why wax over oil though?

Found the liberon stuff too, they seem to make everything.

The oil takes for ever to dry properly and pongs a bit, it also needs done
quite regularly. It also seems to attract dirt and dust (think drive chain) I
have and do use oil. But for day to day use, with a family I'd use the sanding sealer and wax. The finish looks warm and natural luvly

I haven't got a fetish for wood honest
