Winter tyres? (cars)

Conti are on offer at kwikfit at the moment. The octavia is getting some tomorrow at £370.

that is rediculous. dont tell them. how will they know they are not o.e. spec? a lot of vw's foe instance can be ordered with a winter pack which includes winter tyres.

i hate insurance companies

They use they phrase 'had been claimed' in the first paragraph. Lazy sensationalistic journalism. Too much like hard work to get behind the story and find out the truth.

On the Briskoda forum, there is a thread about the insurance companies charging a premium for the 'modification of spec'. I don't see it as a modification, so i haven't informed them, I didn't tell when i changed from the oe bridgestones to michelins.

On a brighter note, they've fitted winter Michelins to our rapid response cars and WOW!!!! Huge amount of difference. The car is usuable again, you can actually drive it again. Much bigger difference in the focus than my Octavia. :D

I see Kwikfit are now offering the services of a 'tyre hotel' where you drive in and buy a set of winter tyres and they put your normal tyres into storage. Then in March or April you go back to have your normal tyres re-fitted and they store the winter tyres for you. Not sure what it costs though. Is anybody using this?

Winter tyres are not the be all and end all of snow driving, it's more about skill, ability and education coupled with experience. I am used to racing in difficult conditions so don't tend to get too many problems in the snow. If it gets really bad like last year I just use my wifes ranger.
Sorry think the cheese has it right.

Carl.

They are not the be all and end all but they do help a hell of a lot.

Si- the maxx sport tyres. I ran some cut slicks on my old trackday car without realising they were remoulds at the time. Thought they were great tyres and stood up to lots of heat, bad driving, wrong pressures etc. We never had a problem with them.
When looking for winter tyres for the wifes car i spotted wintermaxx tyres for 90 quid a pair, new. Well remould but full tread. Ended up being talked out of it and bought part worn radials.
Just wondered what your thoughts are on modern remoulds. Have they improved? If i fit them am i going to have the treads seperate and cause the crash to end all crashes?
