Winter tyres? (cars)

Winter tyres are not the be all and end all of snow driving, it's more about skill, ability and education coupled with experience. I am used to racing in difficult conditions so don't tend to get too many problems in the snow. If it gets really bad like last year I just use my wifes ranger.

No they're not the be all and end all, but not everyone has the skill and ability, nor the education and experience, to drive in the snow, or other tricky conditions.
EVERYONE can benefit from using winter tyres in cold weather, no matter how good a driver they think they are. :roll:

what are winter tyres like on normal road surfaces during average temps?

would it not be easier to produce a great tyre first off? i couldnt afford 8 tyres a year,not at nearly £100 each,then track tyres for the xr2

id love a set of tyres that suited gb conditions,winter,dry and potholes lol

The missus uses Michelin Pilot Alpin year round, and has done for the last 3 years. They're holding up pretty well, but the grip ain't al lit could be in warm weather.
The Nokian WR is supposedly a 4 season tyre in the US, hitting mileages of 40k+, but they don't have bends there.
You won't be spending any more on tyres, long term, since you'll only be using each set for roughly half a year. The only added expense is another set of (cheap) wheels.

average. if you drive enthusiastically you'll find them limitted but they wont throw you off the road.

i bought part worn winter tyres for £120 delivered for 4. (185/55/15)

they usually carry a lower speed rating (mine are h which i think is 130 - plenty for your dodgy old fords but i'll have to keep my right foot in check!)

Straight in with a low shot.
Another thing to note, winter tyres are a different compound and they will wear faster above 7 degrees than normal tyres.

You can get 'all season radials' which are supposed to perform well all year round. Suspect they a consistently bad all year round

Don't get me started on them, biggest pile of shite tyres ever made. We used to be the UK distributor for them up until 2002. The build quality is attrocious, they are not even black in colour compared to other tyre brands.

fair point,only ever heard of them from around 2006 iirc,the zeta have been fantastic on the rs,grip well and aint as bad as others in rain. never had them round a track,saving for proper track tyres for that.just outta interest what problems did you come across?colour aint a problem,i have concours tricks i use to keep them black

The problem is the build quality and failure by the company to back up the many warranty claims. Marangoni are mainly an Italian truck re-tread manufacturer and only started producing car tyres in the late 90's. They bought old Pirelli equipment and ran before they could walk. The quality may have improved since my last dealings with them but the brand still leaves a nasty taste in my mouth.
