winter riding? budget lights

these are floating around the petrol stations at the mo.

they are VERY bright and run on 3xAAA and are about £4. easily made watertight with a big O ring as they are screwed together.

to mount to a cateye reflector bracket, just pop the battery cover off and poke the magnet out. this leaves you a nice mounting hole. a self tapper into where the 'handy hook' sits will toughen up the fitting. use a short one at an angle so not to foul the batteries.

very bright a wide - hard to explain but two would be almost daylight

batery life - not sure but bet you could get 2 hours at least from decent alkalines

I have to admit I do wonder why good bike lights cost so much when they use freely available and relatively cheap technology.

It is only a torch with a separate battery pack.

Surely manufacturers realise if they reduce the cost(profit margin) on a good product they will sell more units to make up the difference.

Hmm, strokes chin .... he who buys cheap lights pays twice. Once for the lights and again for dental reconstruction.
