Winter gloves recommendations.

It's that time of year, fingers are going numb in the morning and it's time to buy some full finger gloves. I need some mainly for commuter duty but would like to use them for XC rides at the weekends too. What do you use/recommend? Jerky suggested some fishing ones from Aldi but I can't find them.

I find warm ones are best but personally I can recommend Pearl Izumi Cyclone gloves but not to everyones taste as the padding is quite thick. Also have some Northwave Outlast ones which are very good and some Altura Sheild waterproof ones which are a bitt OTT and for very cold weather.

For nice toasty hands even I go for the layering approach.

When it's really cold I go for close fitting Merino wool base layer gloves. Then a synthetic glove, followed buy a fairly bulky pair of Specialized winter gloves on the outside which I've owned for a few years now. These have kept my hands warm down to about minus 10.

In slightly milder conditions I still go for the Merino layer combined with a pair of Neoprene backed 661 Storm Watch gloves. (No longer available sadly)

I do swear by Merino wool layers for hands, feet and body in the cold.

I picked a fairly cheap pair in Halfords, about £8.00 if I remember correctly, they are a sort of dense, thin fleece with a plastic/letherette patch on the plams. I think gloves are quite a personal thing though, some people seem to get cold hands and feet much more than others, if you need something really toasty, have a look at some winter motorcycle gloves.

Not cheap , but the very warmest!

I have the specialized version of these from bitd,Fantastic 8)
warm as toast and sometimes so warm it causes your hands to sweat
The spesh ones are neoprene and are not waterproof though i found another company that made lobster overs
These turned out to be far less waterproof than advertised
However im going to wash the nikwax fabric waterproofing into them[the stuff you use on jackets]see if that helps :?

Not sure if I could wear those two finger mitt things, I think it will feel odd.

I like the Altuuras & Pearl Izumi I will check them out. I have some Merino wool socks that are fantastic, didn't even think about wool gloves, will look into that also. Thanks.
