Wilderness Trail Bikes (WTB) Phoenix Ti - Steve Potts Frame

Bikepimp, why?

This thread stirs a range of emotions....

Outing is what we do here on retrobike, so I can't be mad...not like I had a shot at it.

Though I find many of the nicer finds don't get outed till it's too late, if at all.

Forgive my whining

:D best of luck to the bidders; some one will be getting a great frame.

had I been more patient, a couple months later, a medium popped up on the bay local to me.

This large is a bit too large, thus I've been gauging interest...would really love to trade it for a medium phoenix Ti or a Fat Ti.

That would fit me too, but I don't have a suitable exchange.

Yes, I'm sure it would fit you the way it is suppose to fit. I believe I will get away with it due to my long limbs, but the seatpost will not be extended to where it needs to be to take full advantage of the frames geometry, since this size is intended for a person over 6' tall.

My wingspan is 6'3"
my height...not so much
:?

Back in the early days, I was always told that Titanium wasn't stiff enough in the larger sizes for big torquey kids like me (6'3" 220, ok closer to 230 now). I was alwas envious of the titanium builds (Titanium envy). Was there truth to this or was the issue corrected as titanium bike production progressed out of the early 90's?

Issues with stiffness are often addressed with tube shaping. Merlin for example shapes the chain and seat stays in such a way as to allow good vertical flex for a nice supple ride. But they still maintain very good lateral stiffness. Just look at a Jones Titanium space frame. I rode one and it flexes alot vertically but it is very stiff laterally. It is the same way a poorly made steel frame can ride like crap. Big boys like us always get the short end of the stick. We have to pay more for stiffer frames, wheels and more durable parts.
