I kinda figure the term "pictures" is something of a quant artifact that will, sadly, die out.

The term Movies comes from "Moving Pictures" if you are going to the pictures you might just be going to an art gallery.

Just like terms like "the flicks" or "the magic lantern"...

Although, truth be told, "movies" just seem a very american term - 20 or 30 or years ago, I suspect it didn't have quite the same prominence over here.

"going to the pictures" was a phrase I nostalgically remember from my childhood.
