Why wearing gloves is a good idea

i came off back in my 'yoof' and took literally all of the skin off my little-finger knuckle - it was a keeper, i can still admire the scars today.
Stupid thing was, i was being towed by a moped and i may or may not have had a few cans of tetleys.... the things kids do eh?
35mph onto tarmac makes you wish you'd been wearing your gloves.

few years back i was riding my old maverik girder when the rear light kept clipping the spokes.rather than stop i decided to lean round and move the light.i should have looked better because i grabbed a spoke by accident .this jammed my hand in the wheel and smacked it against the rear stay.it bent all my fingers out of their joints.blood poured out from between all the nails...felt like some one had taken a claw hammer to my hand....managed to tacco a steel wheel doing that.have always worn something on my hands since then........too many crashes ......i am the rocky of the cycling world..forever blocking hits to the body using my head..... :D

A mate and I in our teenage years were coming down a track in the lakes. He fell off and proceeded to use a dry stone wall as a brake.

The skin on his fingers was sliced so it peeled back in nice flaps. He was wearing gloves, shich were shredded, bit I dread to think how nasty it would have been without them. That was also one of the best adverts for wearing a helmet I'd seen. It had split in two, and I imagine he would have been dead without it.

I always wear gloves, I've fallen off enouth times to recognise the merits.

These days I feel quite naked without gloves and helmet Minimum, only occasianally i take those super short road trips to teh shops without, feels wrong though, either that or when on hols and too scorchio for a helmet.

Hands didn't get a look in last week when I fell off though, all elbows and ribs breaking the fall!

ditto

Likewise. Wiped out a couple of weeks ago, slow speed and painless enough but the palm on my right glove had a huge hole torn in it from an unfortunately placed rock, lost count of the number of times I've thought "I'm glad that wasn't my hand!".

You needed proper retro fluoro dominator gloves :)

Or the Local Motion ones with the rubber armour on the back!

I remember when I came off when I wasn't wearing gloves. Was about to face plant and what did I do? You guessed it! I put my hands out in front of me! I spent about 2 hours with a needle picking the gravel out of the palms of my hands! Always worn gloves ever since.

those are the ones - Local Motion Dominator!

I knew they were called something but I just couldn't remember what!

dirty finger nails...
But what is the white stuff on your thumb and index finger

Not sure about the white stuff but the dirty hands are due to a) maintaining bike  and b) riding bike offroad  . Clearly I must get more metrosexual and spend more time on my hand care regime, less on my bike

Now where did I put that moisturiser......
