Why old forks have a tiny space for the headset seat?

Retro Newbie
Hello,

Checking some vintage forks, comparing it with the new models, I can see how tiny is the space for seat the headset in the top of the crown, around the steering tube.

Why the old have this small space?

I put this two forks in which can check the difference, both are threadless.

Thanks,

Re:

They're both modern forks.

But anyway
Vintage/Retro forks varied. Some had wider some didn't.
You only needed enough to allow the crown to locate and lay flat. They didn't really twist or break in use, only in removal :-)

Excuse me, but I'm also of the thinking "why, why are older bikes of the less good nature?" I have three and am counting, so would love to know TBH!
