Why cut a seatpost????

Don't think I've ever cut a seatpost...

...though I did have to go to the other extreme with SWMBO's Stumpy; it's s diddy frame and I've fitted a USE carbon sus. seatpost but the upper bottlecage boss was stopping it going low enough, so I had to drill out the boss. Covered it with the NOS decals though 8)

as for weight, how much does 50mm of seat tube weigh? are any of us that elite??

No, but some of us are that anal.

Personally I have never done it, but I will be soom so my wife can ride my Stumpjumper which has an interrupted seat tube.

what material, seat post diameter and wall thickness?

Why anal???? - seems perfectly ok to pay over the odds on here for some 1993 NOS Whizbo* cantilevers when modern v-brakes are far superior .... yet that does not seem to be growned upon. If I want my bike to be 5 g lighter than yours then so what?

So you haven't read the thread and taken the OCD / Aspergers test, then...

I have one thats cut but only for my Proflex and thats due to the seatpost stop preventing it from hitting the rear Shock/Swingarm Assembly.

you sure about that? On my XP8 frame there is a small lump welded on on the inside of the seat tube at the bottom to stop any post from dropping too low. I had to shorten my post by about 5 mm as it was a tad too high.

Exactly, if i put the post in un-cut i would need to be about 9ft Tall to sit on it :D

I cut a NOS Turquoise Moby to put in my old Proflex but then that was a masterpiece of madness with turquoise everything. There's a cut down silver one in my latest 'flex as well...

I meant I'm the sort of person that would, but so far I haven't which surprises me!

I haven't bought the post that will be cut yet, but it will be aluminium 30.9, my chop saw will be through it in seconds!

I've considered cutting one of mine. My 503 has about 4" of seat tube which is the correct diameter for the post, everything below is wider. There's about 4" that simply isn't clamped anywhere.
Then again the bike has a hi-ten fork, so it's plenty heavy anyway. No need to start the whole weight wheenie thing, especially since I insist on keeping the Altus A-10 groupset anyway.
Those 20 grams I might save aren't going to make a blind bit of difference.

Seatpost can sometimes hit the inside of the bottle cage mounts, preventing it from dropping all the way down

Agree. Had that 3 times.
