You can strip them right down, but no-one ever recommends it as it is a damn fiddly job. The lock ring is LH thread, and squillions of tiny ball bearings will come spilling out, but its do-able if you have the patience. A smear of gease to hold all the balls in place on re-assembly, but mind the pawls only get a drop of oil and not grease, or they'll stick, and you'll have a free-wheel in both directions! I do recall a post where someone described a method of flushing out the freewheel assy somehow without the need for taking it apart? This sounds like it could be a good plan B?
