Up there I saw workers spraying roads with water overnight to turn them to ice again once it had worn through with traffic and only about 50% of cars had studded tyres the rest had winter tyres (which worked very well according to the taxi driver).
Anyway I digress, the locals had a funny shuffle walk, just slide your feet along as if you're cross country skiing... I won't pretend I didn't fall over but it did work for the most part.

i may try that,wont look any dafter than i already do. thaw would be best tho.
