Which is more suited to a SS build?

people,

I currently have a rather nice Privateer S built up SS, but also have a Nishiki Alien frame on the way, Im thinking that whilst the Bonty is more in the spirit of SS, it would make a better geared bike with some sus forks on for when I just need to go retro, but have to try and keep up with my mates... However, will the elevated Nishiki look a bit odd with only one gear?

I know its not the hardest of situations to be in, but Im a bit tired of thinking about it! Waddya reckon?

Odd, not really. It would look pretty good IMHO. Do it and if you think it sucks, change it back, or, use a Mr Control Mountain Bike Chain Tensioner MK2 Single SPD to give it the 'geared look'.

hmmm, Im using an old campag Mountain rear mech as a tensioner on the Bonty at the minute, so maybe it wont be so bad... ill play with it.

With a Nishiki Alien you can tension the chain by Ghost gear which is really cool looking and extrememely simple.

Get an old chainring about the size of the chain ring you are using and place it between the chain, between the front chainring and the sprocket.
Move it backwards toward the sprocket one tooth at a time until correct chain tension has been achieved. As long as correct tension is achieved the 'Ghost' chainring will not come out, least ways mine stays put on the rough terrain of Glentress.

An Alien has a raised chainstay which means it does not interfere with the tensioning chainring. Many folk seeing my ghost ring tensioner have described it as very smart looking !

Cheers

I don't think I've seen an elevated stay SS? Bonty's are 10 a penny

I think it would be great because you don't need to break the chain to remove it, although this would only be useful if you change your gearing often or like to clean it a lot.

Not sure if an Elevated stay bike would flex a lot during those out of the saddle extreme effort scenarious which SS's tend to get you into? Would the flex be enough to cause chain problems, or early frame death even?

Build it and find out for us... I vote SS the Nishiki
