Which hub/rim for. .

I recently had an M770 rear hub (none disc) with DT Revs* to a Mavic XC717 and is working perfectly. Modern rear XT hubs are as light as retro Hope Ti-Glides.
Build by CRC as it was cheaper than just getting the parts individually and saves me the bother :)
At the time Merlin didn't build with the new XT hubs just some old naff looking black things at the time which wasn't long ago, but they could be using the newer XT hubs now.

Plus with XC717 and the Silver hubs it blends in with retro quite easily.

Anyways, the Hope hubs are suppose to be good so there is you choice.

I'd go XT/XC717 and save my money for other thing.
At todays prices as I just checked Merlin are 98p cheaper, though CRC build it up very well (handbuilt) and come in nice wheel boxes. No idea about Merlin other than should be handbuilt and done well.
Seems prices have gone up a little as it's seems to be about £15 more now (think I had a 10% off weekend deal at the time though)

If I had plenty of cash I would look for XTR/Hope etc...

*I'm not overly heavy.

The red nipples in you build may be the problem and you'll have to ring them up to see what they can do.

If money was no object, I would buy Hope hubs.

They will more than likely outlast your bike. Have you noticed how many 1990s Hope hubs are still for sale in these pages? The survival rate is very high indeed, when you consider how specialist an item they are.

As for XT/XTR, I don't like the current designs; they are not as well sealed as previous versions. I think Deore/LX is the best Shimano make these days, at the price they sell for they are almost disposable.

I had a hope suspension hub front and XT rear hub (on Mavic xxx's) put on my '93 Cinder Cone (in '93 - spent £600 on the bike and immediately done another £600 on upgrades and stuff)..

Back in the days when cheque spread was an option ;)

CRC wheelbuild quality is a bit suspect in my humble...l won't buy custom wheels from them anymore, I rather have them built at my LBS.

+1 for XT / Mavic 717

I'd go for centre-lock over 6-bolt as they are lighter. I like the stock look of the XT / 717 combo.

The noise of a Hope hub would irritate the hell out of me!

I'd go for as lewis says and stick to hope 8)
New pro2's cant go wrong, but remember the words to the wet wet wet song[i think it was them]'he always has the best but never buys new'

Plenty of people on ebay just want new all the time.I'd think you would pick up a set of them in the colour of your choice for under £250

I've always stuck to Hope, ive used them for years and never once had a problem
Im currently using silver hope bulbs[5 bolt] on silver x517's,they are in great condition and only cost me £80
The latest wheels. The red ti-glide and suspension on mavic X517's also in red have cost me about £200 to build. The rear hub and rim are brand new and the front is under 50miles.
They are splined for disc but are very rare, very nice and still very retro 8)

Stick to what you know best.Hunting the best for your money on ebay :D

You must also only get the green team issue versions
