Wheel & Tyres

I have an old Trek 850 I am doing up. It is my first build and I am learning all the time.

What do you guys do about wheels & tyres? I want to get some new ones but don't want to spend a fortune. Tyres look easy enough to source but 26" MTB wheel sets seems to be another matter.

Would love to know your tips.

Edit: I forgot to mention my main problem being that I have a suntour 7 speed freewheel on the rear wheel and would rather clean that up and put on the new wheel so I don't have to change the shifters etc.

you wouldnt have to change shifters uf you want to keep it 7 speed you can just get a wheel the takes a more modern 7 speed cassette on its freehub built onto the hub.

tyres depend on riding style and budget and wheels the same

As above - the suntour shifters will be compatible with any 7 speed wheelset. In fact the Suntour freewheels are only compatible with their own hubs as far as I know, as the lower cogs act as a locking from memory.

Post up a thread in the wanted section on here. I'm sure there's somebody on here who can offer you a good quality wheelset for not too much £££. Good luck with the project
