Wheel question

I am probably being thick here, so forgive me if so.
Can I use a rear wheel with an 8 speed cassette on with my 9 speed shifters?

I bought a lovely RC200 off the bay, alas the rear wheel needs a new freehub body and is very untrue, so am looking at buying a new/second hand wheel, yet I cannot find a 9 speed cassette/rear wheel, which suits V brakes for love nor money. Any ideas hugely appreciated.

You can, but it will skip all over the place and not index.

But worry not, you can fit a 9 speed cassette onto the wheel no problem.

for all intents and purposes 8 and 9 speed wheels are the same. it just the cassette/cogs that you put on it that matter.

and curiosity, what rear wheel does it have now, hub make/model?

If it needs a new free hub AND is badly out of true, a "new" complete wheel is probably better vfm. I don't understand the "cannot find" bit - I know disc-only rims/wheels increasingly common but surely plenty with braking tracks still about?

Or change shifters to thumbies with friction/SIS settings and then run 8 or 9 (or less) according to what you have available!

thanks for answers. Its a Deore XT FH-M750 hub.

By cannot find, i mean after scouring here and ebay. I could buy new, but i thought i'd try and keep it as correct year as possible.

Maybe you need to post in the wanted section.
I assume you are after any ok 8/9 speed hub (e.g. lx or xt) attached to a period rim (e.g. mavic something or other).

If you find yourself going the new route then should be able to get a wheel with a mavic non-disc rim easily from chain reaction. Deore or xt hub with mavic xc717 rim perhaps ?
