Shimano DX, from 1990. For bomb-proof reliability and an ability to run through anything for 7 years (and god knows how many miles) without ever needing to be re-greased.
I simply cannot choose between them...... The Hugi's are really unique and make the most badass sound, but the White Industries are simply gorgeous, bulletproof, and still being made by the same people, pretty rare for a 'boutique' manufacturer, they really have their sh!t together.
Glad to see people mention Pulstar-these are pretty much the first mass production straight pull hubs, but they don't get a lot of love...I think the build quality of the rear hub was bad or something, I can't remember what the story was there.
I have a few faves, HUGI's for the noise & no doubt build quality.
Ringle super 8 & super Bubba for looks (in the right colour)
My red Hope ti & fatso - cos there mine.
Lastly, anyone seen a Hershey 'naked' before?
You can't fault XT hubs, fitted with harder races, cones & bearings, than lower groups, if looked after they should go on forever, my XT's have been re-greased & stripped so many times in my maintainance classes, its unreal. They should never wear.
For best quality it's gotta be Royce. Also love Phil Wood, and I've run a White rear for about 15 years with no prob's, its a lovely thing.
I've a soft spot for Campag too, - but for ultimate bling it has to be Westpine Neutron. You'd have a job finding a front though, let alone the ultra-rare rear. Very pretty indeed.
I know there's a lot of very pretty kit out there but a lot of it is machined out of billet or has some find of whacky bearings inside or whatever - I don't have a huge amount of experience with the exotica
The better of the mass market forged hubs with simple cup and cone bearings = No worries. Aye, that'll do me
XT being me faves. Nice to get them with all the logos intact and no water damage to the lacquer!
